Quilt Block Of The Month April Step by Step
Step 1 – How To Prepare Your Fabric Pieces For Applique
As this block is made with applique, you will need to download the free pattern and print out two copies of it, one to cut out all the paper templates, and one to keep it for later, in case you want to make a more than one quilt.
Each piece for the applique, should be cut the same way.
Take the fabric for each piece and place the paper template on the back of the fabric and pin it to the fabric, cut out the fabric adding 1/4 inch for the seam.
Make some cuts with a pair of scissors on the curved seams or in any corner or angle seam.
At this point, I like to make some basting stitching and remove the pins, I find basting stitches help better to keep the piece in its place while you work on it.
Fold to the back all seams and press with warm iron or with your fingers.
Prepare all the fabric pieces this way.
Stems are cut and fold the seams to the back, you might not need to cut out the paper template for them.
To make the leaves on this block, I will work on them with the applique technique that doesn’t require the paper template, the fold to the back the seam technique.

On the image below, you can take a look on how I prepared all the pieces, on the video you can watch how I prepared the boot sole, as it is a narrow piece, I placed the paper template on the back of the fabric, I fold to the back the piece and pin it. As you do the basting stitching on the seam, remove the paper template.
The two flowers are prepared with the yo-yo technique.
Step 2 – How To Hand Applique On The Quilt Of The Month.
When you get all the pieces for the applique ready, place them on the block of the month block, and arrange them in their place, pin all the pieces and make some basting stitches and remove all the pins.
Now all the pieces are ready to work on the hand applique, start with the first pieces, when you finish doing the hand applique of each piece, cut out the fabric from the block on the back and remove the paper template. Do the same with all the pieces.
On the image below, you can see how the block looks like when the hand applique is finished on the first layer of hand applique, the piece is ready to cut out the fabric and remove the paper templates.

Step 3 – How To Do The Blanket Stitching On The Block Of The Month
With a single sewing thread in gray or brown, you can work on the blanket stitching all around each piece of the applique.
Step 4 – How To Applique The Ladybugs on the Block Of The Month April
The two ladybugs applique are small pieces, you can work on them with the technique of folding the seam to the back, and the head as two small yo-yo pieces, or you can do the applique with raw edging.
