Quilt Block Of The Month February Step by Step
This is an easy block to make for the Quilt Block Of The Month as you might have already worked on the making of all blocks for this quilt, the measures and instructions to follow are on the post for the tutorial for the month of March.
Step 1 – Prepare All The Fabric Pieces For The Applique.
Download and print out the free pattern, make two copies of it.
Cut out all the pieces for this block from the copies you made, trace each piece on the fabric and cut out the fabric adding 1/4 inch for the seam.
Step 2 – Prepare All The Pieces For The Applique
There are a few different techniques to make the applique for a quilt block, if you already use one, follow the steps you use to follow to work on it.
I will share on this post how I work with the paper templates to give the shape to each piece for the applique.
Cut out each template and pin it on the back of each fabric piece, make a few cuts on any curved seam, fold back the seam and do basting stitches to give the shape to each piece.
I like to baste each piece as it will keep the shape all the time as you work on the applique, many quilters might use the glue technique, and it works great, I like the results you can get when working with it, but if you don’t work fast to do the applique and remove the paper, it can be harder to remove the paper from each piece as it can get so glued to the fabric.
When basting each piece, it will be easier for you to cut out all the stitches and remove the paper from each piece anytime you finish working the applique of each piece.
Step 3 – Arrange all The Pieces For The Applique
Lay the block quilt on your work table and arrange all the pieces for the applique, start with the pieces that go first, and do the applique, cut out the fabric from the back leaving always 1/4 inch for the seam and remove the paper from each piece.
Lay over the applique pieces you already have on the block, the smaller pieces that go on them, pin or baste them and work on the applique, cut out the fabric from the back and remove the paper.
Keep working this way until you do the applique of all the pieces.
On the image below, you can take a look how the block of the month looks like when the applique of all pieces are finished. The fabric from the back is cut out and the paper templates are all removed.
Step 5 – Let’s Do The Embroidery On The Block Of The Month
I recommend using an embroidery loop as it will help you to do the embroidery on the block easier and your stitches will look pretty.
Buttonhole stitch – All around each piece of the applique, it can be done with DMC embroidery floss, one thread on your needle, or you can use sewing thread in gray.
Satin Stitch – Angel eyes
Back stitch – The line on the forehead
Daisy Stitch – Flowers and leaves
I recommend using DMC embroidery floss for the embroidery, two threads.
On the image below you can take a look to how the Block Of The Month For February looks like once it’s finished.

As you have two blocks for the Quilt Block of the Month, you can sew them together by one side, February to March.
