Best tips to Hand Quilting is a short tutorial where I tell you the steps I follow to finish a quilt top and how to make the quilting sandwich.
It’s time to finish the ABC quilt top, it will be easy to work on it as I already have almost the half done,
I just need to cut the small fabric strips to sew together the rest of the blocks and it will be finished.
You can follow these easy steps to make the quilting sandwich for any quilt, the steps to work on are the same for any quilt.
Best Tips To Hand Quilting
Materials To Make Hand Quilting.
- Pieces of cotton 100 % fabric in different color of 2 x 5″
- Squares of cotton 100 % fabric in beige of 2 x 5″
- One piece of thin batting for a full size bed.
- 3 package of 5 fat quarters.
- 1 meter of cotton fabric any color.
- Sewing machine, I have at home a small sewing machine, it’s easy to work on it and it helps me to do all the sewing for my quilts.
- Patchwork ruler
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting Mat
- Scissors
Pins, safety pins, needle, quilting thread, thimble.

Tutorial To Make The Hand Quilting
How To Finish A Quilt Top
Step 1 – As this quilt was a UFO, it has a good size to start working on it, all I need is to make the strips of blocks to sew them to this top.
The first step I will work on, it’s to place the quilt ABC on my bed to display the rest of the blocks with the applique finished, so I can decide the order to sew them to the top.
I need to be sure there will be two blocks with the same applique design together.
How To Add More Blocks To A Quilt Top
Step 2 – I take my time to display all the blocks.
When I’m happy about how the blocks look, it’s time to sew the pieces of fabric to sew the blocks together to make the strips to sew to the quilt top.

Step 3 – When the quilt top is finished it’s time to sew the fat quarters to make the piece for the back of the quilt.
How To Make A Quilting Sandwich
Step 4 – When the quilt top and the piece for the back are finished, it’s time to make the quilting sandwich.
As I don’t have a room as a quilting studio, I use to display the three layers of fabric on the floor of my room, once I get the three layers on the floor:
- The piece of fabric for the back of the quilt
- The batting fabric
- The quilt top
It’s time to pinch some safety pins to hold the three layers of fabric together while I work on the hand quilting.

Step 5 – It’s time to start the quilting for the ABC Quilt.
As I love to work on the quilting by hand, I get the quilt on a small table, I got used to working on the hand quilting this way.
There are many ways you can work on the hand quilting, the most important is you enjoy the work as you work on it.
You can make it as I do by placing the quilt on a table.
Some quilters favorite technique is to place the quilt on a quilting hoop or a quilting frame.
All quilting techniques are good, the most important is that you enjoy the work of hand quilting.
How To Start The Hand Quilting On A Big Quilt
This is how the ABC quilt looks like on a small table while I work on it.
It will take me sometime to finish the hand quilting, I like to work on it almost every day while I watch some TV.
If you’re new to hand quilting but you give it a try I’m sure you will love it.
Starting to make the hand quilting can take a while until you get used to making it, the best tip I can give you will be to start with something small and not a big quilt, you always can make a pillow or a small quilt.
This way it will be easy to work on it and it won’t take too long to finish it.
Another good point is to do something small as a first project for hand quilting so that you will finish it soon and you can check if hand quilting is for you or not.
If you love hand quilting, I would always suggest to have a good thimble, it will protect your fingers and it will help you to work better and make nice stitches in your quilt.
Another good tool to keep in mind to do the hand quilting is to get a quilting hoop, if you’re new you might want to give it a try, many quilters get used to working with it with beautiful results.
I tried the quilting hoop, but I didn’t get used to working with it, so I went back to lay the quilt on a small table, but this is not a reason why I wouldn’t suggest to you to try a quilting hoop and use it if you like to work on it.
The most important is to find the right tool to work with to keep working to make beautiful quilts.
