1 – Cut All Your Fabrics
Cut the two pieces of fabric for the background with the help of a rotary cutter, a ruler and a cutting mat.
Download the free pattern and with a pair of scissors for cutting paper, cut out the paper templates. Trace each piece on the fabric and cut out each piece from the fabric.
On this Quilt block, you can decide which pieces will be worked with the raw edge and which ones will be worked with the needle turn technique. On the video, the only pieces I work with the needle turn technique are the trees and the house roof, the rest of the pieces are worked with raw edge and buttonhole stitching on the edge.
2 – Arrange All The Pieces On the Background
Arrange all the pieces of fabric on the background, you can follow the diagram on the free pattern or you can create your own.
Pinch a pin on each piece, and when you’re happy how the layout looks, you can baste the pieces to the background and remove the pins.
3 – How To Make The Quilting Sandwich
On this piece, once you have all the pieces basted to the background fabric, you can make the quilting sandwich by placing the fabric for the back under this piece, in case you’re making the Sampler Quilt 2021 with batting fabric, you can place it between the two layer of fabric.
Pinch enough safety pins.
Now you can work on the applique of all the piece on this block. As you work on the applique of each piece, you’ll be working also on the quilting.
This quilt block is worked very freely and it will help you to get more creative.
The door and the two windows on the house are traced with a pencil and will be embroidered with back stitch with one thread in gray.
4 – Trim The House Quilt Block
When the work of applique and quilting is finished, you can trim this block to 10 x 10 inches.
