When you have some fabric left from the quilt you just finish, making a quilted bag can be the quilting project you might want to make.

We all love to make more than one bag, and when you’re a quilter, I’m sure you might want to find another tutorial to make a cute chevron quilt pattern bag.

How To Make A Chevron Quilt Block

You will need to make two blocks the same to make the patchwork bag.

Materials

  • 12 Pieces of fabric A of 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches cut in triangles
  • 12 Pieces of fabric B of 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches cut in triangles
  • 24 pieces of fabric C of 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches cut in triangles

Sew together the 12 pieces of fabric A to 12 pieces of fabric C (sew on the diagonal) open and press.

Sew together the 12 pieces of fabric B to 12 pieces of fabric C (sew on the diagonal) open and press.

On your work table, arrange the squares making 4 lines, follow the layout of each block on the image below. Pinch all the squares on each line and sew on each strip, press.

Sew on the four strips to make a block, follow the layout on the image below. Press.

How To Make The Chrevron Quilt Pattern Drawstring Bag

1 Cut All Your Fabrics

  • 2 Patchwork blocks of 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, these two patchwork blocks can be made with the chevron quilt pattern or with any other patchwork pattern.
  • 1 piece of fabric A of 8 1/4 x 5 inches
  • 1 piece of batting fabric of 24 x 14 inches

Fold the piece of fabric A in the middle and finger press the middle point on both sides, lay this piece of fabric over one patchwork block, center point to center point, pinch two or three pins and sew on. Do the same with the other patchwork block. Press.

Lay the piece over the piece of batting fabric, pinch a few safety pins and work on the quilting, it can be done by hand or with your sewing machine.

When the quilting is finished, make some basting stitches all around the piece and with your scissors trim the piece, follow the quilted piece edges.

2 – Cut The Fabric Piece For The Lining

The quilted piece will be the pattern to cut the fabric for the lining for the bag, . Cut the piece of fabric for the lining with your scissors.

3 – How To Make The Handles and The Interior Pockets

To make the two Handles, you will need to cut 2 pieces of fabric of 3 x 13 inches, fold each piece at a time in the middle, lengthwise and finger press or press with your iron, open the piece and fold each edge to the center, finger press or press with your iron, then you will fold in the middle again each piece, this piece will be folded as bias.

Top stitch on both sides.

To Make the 2 interior pockets, cut two pieces of fabric from the fabric used for the lining of 12 x 5, fold each piece with the pretty side inside, stitch on the three sides 1/4 inch seam allowance, and leave a gap open to turn the piece out.

Trim the four corners diagonally, and turn the piece inside out, push out all the four corners, top stitch the top. Do the same with the two interior pockets.

To make the drawstring pieces, you will need to cut 2 pieces from fabric A of 9 x 3 inches.

Fold twice 1/4 inch on both ends on each piece and stitch on. Fold each piece in the middle lengthwise and stitch on 1/2 inch from the edge, reinforce the stitching at the beginning and at the end of the stitching.

Stitch on 1/2 inch from the top, reinforce the stitching at the beginning and at the end. Both pieces should be made the same.

4 – How To Stitch On The Two Interior Pockets

Lay on your work table the piece of fabric for the lining, fold this piece of fabric in the middle lengthwise and finger press or iron to mark the middle, fold each piece for the interior pockets in the middle and finger press the middle on each piece.

Place each interior pocket on the piece of fabric for the lining, center both pieces on the middle mark, each pocket should be 2 1/2 inch from the top. Pinch a few pins and stitch on your sewing machine, reinforce the stitching at the beginning and at the end.

5 How To Sew On The Handles To The Bag.

Measure 2 1/4 inch each side, from the middle point on each top side of the bag, pinch with a pin each end of each handle, stitch on 1/8 inch seam.

6 How To Sew On The Drawstring Channels To The Bag.

Take each piece for the drawstring channels at a time, and fold it in the middle, pinch the piece to the top of the bag centered. Do the same with the second drawstring channel on the other top of the bag.

Stitch on 1/8 inch seam.

7 How To Sew On The Bag

Lay the quilted piece and the piece of fabric for the lining on your work table and fold it in the middle, stitch on both sides on both pieces, 3/8 inch seam allowance, leave a gap open on one side on the piece for the lining to turn inside out the bag later.

8 How To Make The Boxed Bottom On The Bag

Take one piece at a time and open each corner on the bottom, match well both sides and open flat the seam, pinch two pins and stitch on from edge to the other edge, 1/4 inch seam allowance, reinforce the stitching at the beginning and at the end.

Do the same steps on each bottom corner on both pieces.

9 How To Sew On The Bag

Turn inside out the quilted piece and tuck this piece in the piece for the lining, it should be pretty side to pretty side, pinch a few pins all around the top of the bag, stitch on all around, reinforce the stitching at the end.

Turn the bag inside out by the gap left open on the lining. Stitch to close the gap.

Tuck in the lining in the bag, and do a quilting stitches all around the top of the bag. This step can be also made by machine.

10 Thread The Cording Through The Channels

Cut two cords of 24 inches each one, and thread each cord from each side, this step can be made with the help of pinching a safety pin on one end of the cord.

Tie a knot on both ends of each cord.

Note: for this bag, I made two thin bias with fabric A, I just cut the piece of fabric to make each cord of 24 x 1 1/2 inches, I folded like a bias and top stitched each piece.
