Pumpkin Drawstring Bag Step by Step Tutorial
1 How To Cut The Boxed Bottom
Lay on your work table the pieces of fabric for the bag and for the lining, with the help of a quilting ruler and a pencil for fabric, trace each corner with a square of1 3/4 x 1 3/4 inches.
Cut out each corner with the help of a pair of scissors for fabric.
2 How To Applique The Eyes And Nose On The Front Of The Bag
As this is an easy sewing tutorial, you can cut out the eyes and nose from a black fabric or dark blue, I decided to use a dark blue fabric with some white pattern on it.
Draw on a piece of paper one oval of 7/8 x 3/4 of inch, and the nose is a triangle of 1 inch on the base and 3/4 inch high. Cut out the paper templates and trace the eyes and the nose on a piece of fabric, cut out the two eyes and one nose with the help of a pair of scissors for fabric, no need to add any more fabric for the seam.
Take one piece of fabric to make the bag, and fold it in the middle lengthwise, finger press to mark the middle, place the nose first in the middle and 4 inches from the top, place the eyes. Pinch a pin on each piece.
Do the applique of the nose and eyes with buttonhole stitch, raw edge, with one thread in your needle.
3 – How To Do The Embroidery Of The Mouth
With a pencil for fabric, trace the mouth on the fabric, you can decide to trace the mouth for the pumpkin with a big smile as it’s drawn for the Halloween pumpkins or trace a single line as I did.
Do the embroidery with a single thread in black with back stitch.
4 How To Do the Quilting
On this drawstring bag, the only quilted piece will be the front of the bag.
Lay on your work table the front piece of the bag and with the quilting ruler, trace the lines to be quilted, lines should be traced 1 1/2 inch apart both ways to trace the diamonds lines.
Put the flannel fabric on the back of the front piece and pinch a few safety pins, you can do the quilting by hand or with you’re sewing machine.
5 How To Sew The Two Drawstring Channels
Take the two pieces of fabric for the drawstring channels, fold to the back 1/4 inch on both ends on each piece, and sew on both ends on both pieces.
Fold each piece in the middle lengthwise and place each piece on top of each piece of the bag, pinch two or three pins and sew on each piece, 1/8 inch seam. Remove the pins.
5 How To Sew On The Pumpkin Drawstring Bag
Take the front piece of the bag that is already quilted and trim the flannel with the help of a pair of scissors, follow the front piece edges to trim out the flannel.
Lay on your work table the two pieces for the bag and the two pieces for the lining, each pair should be pretty side to pretty side, pinch a few pins on each set and sew on both sides and the bottom. Reinforce the stitching at the beginning and at the end.
6 How To Sew On The Boxed Bottom
Take one piece at a time and open each corner, match the seams and sew on all the line, reinforcing the stitching at the beginning and at the end.
Do the same on each corner, at the end, the two pieces should look like the image below.
7 How To Sew The Drawstring Bag
Take the main piece and turn it out, place this piece inside the piece for the lining and match the seams, pinch a few pins all around the top of the bag, sew on all around.
Turn the bag out by the gap you left on one side of the lining, sew to close the gap.
8 How To Finish The Pumpkin Drawstring Bag
Tuck in the lining in the bag, stitch all around the top of the bag, 1/4 inch from the top.
Now you can insert the cords through the channels, start with one cord from one side and end this cord on the same side, tie a knot on the cord ends, do the same step with the second cord, but from the other side.
The DIY Pumpkin Drawstring Bag is finished and it looks amazing!
Whether you use it for trick or treat on Halloween or if you use it to keep all you’re sewing and quilting tools and notions, I’m sure it will look so cute.
