Flower Quilt Block Patterns to make for the Sampler Quilt 2021, a traditional applique floral block and the French Rose Pattern.
When working on the Sampler Quilt 2021, it’s about time to work on blocks made with Flowers, and one perfect way to work on floral designs is with applique.
However, there’s so many different ways to work on the applique, and today I want to share two different techniques to work on a quilt block, the traditional applique that is done by folding the seam to the back of the fabric, and one block that is made with raw edge.

1 – Cut All Your Fabrics
On this step, download and print twice the free pattern, you’ll be cutting the templates from one copy and keep one copy as a reference and in case, you want to make it later again.
Cut out the central flower, one flower on the corner and one leaf, paper templates.
Mark each template on the fabric on the pretty side, cut out each piece adding the 1/4 inch for the seam allowance.
The fabric to make the four stems, should be cut 1 inch width and the length might be different on each stem as the central flower is different on each side once you lay it on the center of the block.
To work the stems, fold both edges lengthwise and place each piece on the lines diagonally on the block.
Lay each piece for the flowers and leaves on its place, follow the free pattern as reference. Pinch each piece or make one or two big basting stitches on each piece.
Work on the applique of each piece.
2 – How To Do The Embroidery On The Floral Applique Block
The embroidery work on this block is easy to make.
- Buttonhole stitch – Around the edge of each of the four flowers on the corners of the block
- Backstitch – Leaves lines.
- X Stitch – Leaves edges
- Satin Stitch – Four flowers petals

French Rose Quilt Block Pattern
On the second block with flowers for the Sampler Quilt 2021, I’ll be sharing the steps to follow to make a French Rose Quilt Block.
The French Rose Pattern is made from 4 templates of different size and shape for the Rose, and each piece will be stitched to the block with the Raw Edge Technique.
In case, you don’t like the Raw Edge technique, you can add the !/4 inch seam allowance when cutting each piece and work on each piece with the traditional applique technique, by folding to the back the seam as you sew with applique stitch each piece.
2 – How To Stitch On The French Rose Block
Materials and Supplies
- 1 piece of cotton fabric for the background of 11 x 11 inches
- 1 piece of fabric for the back of 11 x 11 inches
- 1 piece of thin batting fabric of 11 x 11 inches (optional)
- Assorted cotton fabric in one color on different tones or prints and green
- Pins, scissors to cut paper, scissors to cut fabric, hand sewing needle, hand sewing thread, applique thread, quilting thread, safety pins.
Lay on your work table the piece of fabric for the background, layover it the four pieces of fabric for the French Rose, pinch a few pins, and lay the leaves, pinch one pin on each leave.
Stitch on the first piece to make the French Rose, this stitching can be done on your sewing machine, I did mine by hand with the back stitch with gray thread.
Turn the piece on the back, and cut out the fabric from the back from the first piece you stitched.
Stitch on the second piece, and cut out the fabric from the back.
Stitch on the third and fourth pieces, you don’t need to cut out the fabric from the back.
Stitch on the two leaves.
How To Quilt The 2 Flower Quilt Blocks
Lay on your work table the two pieces for the back, pretty side down, lay over these two pieces your two Flower Blocks, pretty side up.
In case, you’re working on the Sampler Quilt with batting fabric, place it between the two layers of fabric.
Pinch a few safety pins and you can work on the quilting. It can be done by hand or on your sewing machine.
How To Trim The 2 Flower Quilt Blocks
Once the quilting is done, measure each block with the ruler, and trim each block to 10 x 10 inches.
