2 Quilt Blocks With Borders

Kindred Pinwheel Quilt Block Tutorial

1 – Precut All Your Fabric

As this is a Paper Piecing Pattern, with two pieces to work on, 4 times, I found that if I precut the fabric a little bit bigger than each piece of fabric is needed on the pattern, it helps me to work better and faster.

You can precut your fabric this way:

  • 4 triangles from fabric A of 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches
  • 4 triangles from fabric B of 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches
  • 4 triangles from the fabric for the background of 4 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches
  • 4 pieces from the fabric for the background of 5 1/2 x 2 1/2
  • 4 pieces of fabric for the borders of 1 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches

Download the free Paper Piecing Pattern and cut out the paper templates with a pair of scissors for cutting paper.

2 – How To Stitch On Your Fabric Pieces

Take one paper template at a time and make the four pieces from it first, then you can take the second paper template and make the four pieces needed from it.

As this is a Paper Piecing Pattern tutorial, you will need to work with the paper template to help you to stitch on two pieces to make one piece.

Take one triangle (green fabric, and place it on the back of the paper template, check that the piece covers all the part of the paper template, and fold the line to be sure you have the seam allowance correct, if it is, lay over this piece of fabric, the piece of fabric for the background, right side to right side and pinch a pin on the seam. Open this piece of fabric to be sure it covers all the paper template, if it does, then fold back the fabric and pinch one or two pins to keep the two fabrics and the paper template on their place while you stitch on.

Fold the paper template and stitch on right next to the folded paper, this way, you’ll be saving on paper as you will need to use only one paper template to make the four pieces needed to make the Kindred Pinwheel block

Open the fabric, and check if the fabric from the two pieces stitched cover the paper template, if it does, pinch two pins to hold the paper template to the piece and trim the piece.

Once you get the first piece done, you can do the same steps to make the 8 pieces needed, 4 pieces with one paper template and 4 pieces with the other paper template.

3 – How To Connect All The Pieces To Make The Kindred Pinwheel

Lay all your pieces on your work table, and follow the Kindred Pinwheel layout, take one piece with blue fabric and one piece with the green fabric, and lay one piece over the other, right side to right side, stitch on both pieces together, open and press.

Do the same steps with the other 6 pieces to make 4 squares.

The next steps is to stitch on, two squares to make one half for the Kindred Pinwheel, two times, this way you will have two halves of the Kindred Pinwheel, press.

Lay one half over the other half and nest the center, pinch a couple of pins and stitch on, open and press.
