Sampler Quilt Blocks 18 & 19
Square In A Square Quilt Block Tutorial
The Sampler Quilt Block 18 is the Square in a square quilt block made with the traditional Paper Piecing Pattern.
On this tutorial I will be sharing the easy steps to make your own Paper Piecing Pattern to make the block 18 for the Sampler Quilt 2021.
1 – How To Make A Square In A Square Paper Piecing Pattern
The first thing you need to do is cut out one piece of paper 10 x 10 inches, as you can see on the image below, I made this square of paper by sticking together two pieces of paper cut from two pieces of paper A4 (paper for the copier)
With your ruler mark a line 1/4 inch from the edge on the four sides. Mark the middle point from each line, and join the points with a line.
Mark the middle of the lines you marked and join the middle points with a line, you will get a smaller square.
You need to follow the steps to mark 4 squares on the paper. Your pattern should look like the one shown on the image.
From the patter, I take the measures from all the pieces I will need to stitch on all the pieces, but once I measure each piece I add 3/4 of inch to each piece.
For example: if the square in the center measure 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches, I will cut the piece of 3 1/4 x 3 1/4, as this will give me enough fabric to work on the Paper Piecing Pattern. This way I can pre-cut all the pieces for this block and it will help me to work with ease.
2 – How To Make The Square In A Square Block For The Sampler Quilt
The first thing to do is to number all the pieces on the paper, this will help you to follow the right sequence to stitch on all the pieces, start with the number 1 on the square in the center, then mark down the 2 on one triangle right next to the square and number 3 will be the triangle in front of number 2. These two triangles could be on the sides of the square.
Number 4 will be the triangle on top of the square and number 5 will be on the bottom of the square, keep making down all the number following this sequence.
Once you get all the triangles with the right number, you can start stitching on all the pieces following the number.
On the image below you can see the numbers on the paper piecing pattern, this image will help you to mark down all the numbers in your paper pattern.
3 – How To Quilt The Block Number 18 For The Sampler Quilt
Once you finish stitching all the pieces on the Square In A Square block, you can remove the paper template from the back and press the block.
You need to measure your block and be sure it is 10 x 10, if not, you might need to check the seams’ allowance to be sure they are done correctly. (I had to take off three of the last pieces and stitch them again).
Make your quilting sandwich and you can work on the quilting by hand or with your sewing machine.
How To Make The Sampler Quilt Block 19 – Hexies
Quilters around the world love to make their quilts with hexies, this is a block that has become universal when anyone talks about quilts.
1 – How To Cut Your Hexies To Make The Sampler Quilt 2021 block 19
The first thing to do is to cut a strip of fabric of 2 1/2 inches, then with the rotary cutter and the ruler, cut one end of the strip of fabric with an angle of 60 degrees.
Fold in the middle lengthwise the strip of fabric and with your scissors cut out the small triangle that is on the end of the strip of fabric.
Open the strips of fabric, take one side of the hexagon and fold it to match the edge of the strip of fabric, you will see there is a half hexagon shown up on the strip of fabric, with a good pair of scissors for fabric, cut the hexagon following the sides that are shown on the strip of fabric.
Note: on the video I explain how to do this step, but you can read the instructions in English here.
2 – How To Stitch On The Block With Hexagons
Take the hexagon for the center and one hexagon for the first row, right side to right side, stitch on one side, 1/4 inch seam. Open and press.
Take one hexagon for the first row, and lay it on top of the first hexagon you already stitched on, both hexagons should match, stitch on one side and make a double stitch at the end of that side, this will help you to turn this piece to match the second side to stitch on. Open and press.
Keep stitching the rest of the hexagons until you have the first row all stitched.
Keep stitching the next row of hexagons the same way, but this row will be made with a different fabric.
You will need:
- 1 hexagon for the center
- 6 hexagons for the first row
- 12 hexagons for the second row.
3 – How To Applique The Hexagons To The Block
Once you finish stitching on all the hexagons, cut a piece of fabric of 11 x 11 inches, and lay over it the piece made with the hexagons, pinch a few pins and now you can do the applique by folding the 1/4 inch of the seam to the back.
Once you finish to work on the applique, you can cut out the fabric on the back with a good pair of scissors for fabric.
How To Do The Quilting On The Blocks 18 and 19 For The Sampler Quilt
Lay on your work table the fabric for the back, in case you’re working with batting fabric, lay it on the fabric for the back, now you can place the top for each block over the fabric you have on your work table.
Pinch a few pins and you can work on the quilting.
The quilting can be done by hand or with your sewing machine.
When you finish to work on the quilting on each block, you can measure each block and trim it to 10 x 10 inches.
Your blocks 18 and 19 are finished and they look amazing!
There is only one more block to make, I will be sharing a new tutorial next week so you can make it!
