I’m so glad to sharing today the free pattern and tutorial to make the block # 5, we are almost there, soon will be sewing the 6 blocks together to make the top for the Baltimore mini quilt.
Block # 5 is a circle with four flowers made of 5 petals each one, my purpose of making this tutorials is to share with you how I work while I do applique.
As applique is mostly made by hand, it can take long time to finish one block or a series of blocks to make a quilt. By working on a mini quilt, you’ll get 6 beautiful blocks to work on, easy to make and with some different technique to make applique on your quilts.
This time, I worked on making the flowers with the yo-yos technique but with the fabric cut in a different shape.
On the video, you can watch how I work with one petal, to make the rest of the petals for each flower, you only need to do the same with each petal, you might find by doing this, it’s easy to make petals for flowers that will look good on any quilt.
This time tutorial will be short, as you already have the steps I follow to applique the bias to make the circle on a previous block and you also know the steps I follow to applique leaves on a quilting block.

Tutorial to Make Block # 5.
Step 1
On this step to make block # 5, you need to follow the steps to applique the bias to make the circle.
Once you applique the bias on the block, you can go to step 2.
Step 2
You will get the template to make the petals to download, once you print it out, you can cut with your scissors the template.
To cut the 20 pieces of fabric with this template to make the 4 flowers, you will need to place the template on the fabric and trace it on the fabric with a pencil or marker for fabrics.
This time you don’t add any allowance to the template when you cut out the pieces from the fabric.
Step 3
To make each petal, you need to fold the fabric as I show you on this photo below, fold the fabric where on the two corners to form a triangle, press the fabric with your fingers or with the tool to press paper.
Make a running stitches on on the two sides where you didn’t fold the fabric, use quilting thread or polyester 100% thread to do this step, pull thread to gather, make two little stitches to hold the thread on its place there.
Place the piece on the circle you marked for each flower, and make little stitches where the gather is to hold the piece on its place.
Make applique stitches all around the petal.
You need to do the same on this step on every petal.
Step 4
On this photo below, you can take a better look on how I work to applique the petals for each flower on the block # 5.
To applique the center on each flower, you will need to work on each piece at the time with the yo-yo technique with the paper template inside, just make the running stitches on the piece of fabric, pull out the thread to gather, and press the piece to take the form from the template.
This time, you will need to remove the paper template before you start the applique of this piece.
As the petals are thick to do the applique of the center of the flower, do the applique of the center on the fabric of the petals, don’t try to get to the fabric of the block.
Step 5
When you finish doing the applique of the flowers and the center of the flowers, it will be the time to work on the applique of the leaves.
Cut out the paper template to do the leaves, mark it down on the fabric and cut out each leave adding the allowance to work on the applique, folding the edge inside as you work on the applique.
The block # 5 is finished, and it looks great!
