Making a small quilt for a doll is an easy project to make and it can be made with any patchwork pattern, and it will help you to make something with all those small scraps of fabric you’ve been saving to make something with them, after you finish your quilts.
Easy Patchwork Doll Quilt
On this tutorial, I’ll be sharing the steps to make a Doll Quilt for a rag doll I made before, but the steps are the same when you want to make a bigger or even smaller quilt for a doll, you will need to measure the doll from the neck to the feet and add one inch, and measure the width of the open arms. That will be the size of the quilt you will be making.
How To Make An Easy Patchwork Doll Quilt
Take out all those scraps of cotton fabric you have been saving, choose some you like the most, whether they are strips of fabric or squares, or any other shape, all you need to do is to sew on all those scraps of fabric to make the top for the quilt, you can make the top with the Crumbs Quilt Pattern, Crazy Quilt, Stamps Around The World, or with Hexies.
On this tutorial, I’ll be working with some strips of fabric, the width of each strip can be all the same or different. I had some strips of fabric leftover from some quilting projects, some are 2 inches width, and some are 1 inch in width,
1. Sew On The Strips Of Fabric
Arrange the strips of fabric as you like, by color, or by width, or by the pattern, and sew on one strip to the other on your sewing machine, and keep stitching more strips of fabric until you reach the quilt width desired. Press.
2. Cut The Strips Of Fabric
On this quilt, I cut the strips of fabric in different measures, some are 2 1/2″, while others are only 2 or 1 1/2 “.
3. Sew On The Strips Of Fabric
Sew on the strips of fabric on your sewing machine, you can alternate the order, number the two ends on each strip of fabric like A and B, so start sewing one piece of fabric A with a strip of fabric B, the next strip will start with A, and the next will start with B, and keep working this way until you reach the length of the doll quilt you’re making.
Another option is to cut some strips from a different fabric, and sew on the strips of fabric you cut before with a strip of fabric in between.
Press and trim the top to the desired size.
4. How To Layer The Quilting Sandwich
Once you have the quilt top made, you can measure it, and cut the batting fabric and the backing fabric, a little bigger.
Lay on your work table the bating fabric, lay over it the backing fabric, pretty side up, and lay over it the quilt top, pretty side down, pinch a few pins to hold the three layers together, and sew on the four sides on your sewing machine, don’t forget to leave a gap open on one side to turn the quilt out later.
Trim the batting fabric and backing fabric with a pair of scissors to the size of the quilt top, cut all corners diagonally, remove all the pins and turn the piece out.
Tuck in the seams in the open gap, and stitch to close with ladder stitching.
Put a few safety pins to hold the three layers of fabric, and you can work on the quilting now.
5. How To Do The Quilting On The Easy Doll Quilt
The quilting can be done by hand or with your sewing machine, and it can be done with any quilting pattern you like.
I did the quilting with big stitches, 1/4 inch from the seams, and I use one strand of embroidery floss.
6. How To Finish The Quilt Doll
When making a doll quilt for a young girl or kid, don’t sew on any button or any bead or ribbon on it, to make the doll quilt safe for the young kid to pay with, and don’t forget to remove all pins and safety pins.
If you’re making a Patchwork Doll Quilt for a girl or anybody who understands well not to put anything in their mouth, you can sew on a piece of lace to the quilt, or a ribbon or even a pretty button on it.
I’m sure when you see how easy it is to make the Easy Doll Quilt, you’ll be making more than one, as you can make it with all those pretty scraps of fabric you have been saving after you finish your quilts, and this small quilt, will be a perfect gift for a young girl.
