DIY Applique Pillowcase – Step by Step

Step 1 – Mark The Applique Design On The Fabric

Download the free pattern and make two copies of it.

Put on your work table the pattern and lay over it the fabric piece for the pillow case, pinch four pins and take the fabric with the pattern to a window or a light box to trace the applique design with a pencil or a marker for fabrics.

You can take the fabric piece with the pinned paper pattern under to a window or place it on a light box to mark the pattern on the fabric.

Step 2 – How To Applique The Flower Stems

Cut on the bias a green fabric 3/4 inch, fold the bias in half and stitch it by hand on the first line marked on the fabric for the stems. Fold the bias up to cover the seam and do the applique stitching to close the stems.

Step 3 – How To Do The Applique

For the basket or the vase, cut out the pattern from the paper pattern and place each piece on a fabric, pinch a couple of pins on each piece and cut out each piece from the fabric adding 1/4 inch for the seam.

Fold the seam to the back of each piece and mark it with your fingers. You can do some basting stitches to keep the seams folded on each piece or you can use the glue technique.

Once you get both pieces ready, place each one on its place on the fabric and do the applique stitching of each piece, don’t forget to remove the paper pattern out from each piece.

You can cut out the fabric from the pillow case fabric when you finish the applique of both pieces.

You can continue working on the applique of all the pieces for the leaves and flowers, at this time each piece is small, you can cut out each piece from the pattern or just cut out a piece of fabric and do the applique of each piece as each piece is already traced on the fabric.

Press the piece with warm iron, and trim the piece to 10.5 x 10.5 inches.

With the help of a patchwork ruler and a pencil, trace a line from one corner to the other corner diagonally, then mark the rest of the lines one inch apart, do the same with the other two corners.

Step 8 – Sew On The Pillow Cover

On the two pieces of fabric for the back of the pillow case, fold 3/8″ twice to the back on one side, top stitch on this seam.

Lay both pieces on your work table, and over lap the two pieces to make the back piece for the pillowcase back, (you can sew on a zipper or Velcro)

Lay over this piece the pillowcase front piece and fold twice each side to the front to cover the edge of the pillowcase, pinch a few pins and do the same on the four sides.

Hand stitching or by machine to close all around the pillowcase.
