Today I will be working and sharing the steps to make 3 blocks with the Sawtooth Star to make a table runner, but this time I will make a trick to make the star’s points and I think if you’re a beginner you will love to see how easy it is!

You will need:

  • 4 pieces of fabric color “a” of 4.5 x 2.5 inches – Piece A
  • 8 pieces of fabric color “b” of 2.5 x 2.5 inches – Piece B
  • 4 pieces of fabric color “a” of 2.5 x 2.5 inches – PiieceC
  • 1 pieces of fabric color “c” of 4.5 x 4.5 inches – Piece D
  • 1 piece of batting fabric of 26 x 11 inches
  • 1 piece of fabric for the back of 27 x 12 inches
  • Needle, pins, safety pins, thread, scissors
  • Patchwork ruler, rotary cutter, cutting mat

3 – Fold Square Pieces Into Triangles

This time I fold the 8 square pieces for each star in the middle to make a triangle, you can press the fold with your finger nails or with a warm iron.

4 – Sew on Two Triangles On One Piece A

This time I sew on two triangles on one piece A, you can sew on the edge of the piece A by hand or with your sewing machine, do the same step on the four pieces A for each star.

5 – Sew on The Three Rows

An easy way to sew on a star block is by sewing three rows:

  1. One square “C” + piece A with two triangles + one square “C”
  2. One piece A with two triangles + Piece D + one piece A with two triangles
  3. Same as row 1

Press. The three stars should be made following the same steps.

Once you have all the three rows for the three stars made, you can sew on row 1 of each star to row 2, open and press.

Then you need to stitch row 3 to the block, open and press. Repeat these last two steps to stitch the three rows for the three stars, press.

6 – Stitching The Three Stars Together

Once you have the three stars done, if you need to trim go ahead, and trim each star with the help of the patchwork ruler, rotary cutter and the cutting mat.

To make the table runner all you need is to stitch one star to the second star and than stitch the last star to the second star, press.

7 – Make the Quilting Sandwich

It’s time to make the quilting sandwich by laying the back fabric, right side down on your table work and lay over it the batting fabric, than lay over the batting fabric the table runner.

This time I use a few safety pins to hold the three layers together while I work on the quilting by hand.

8 – Trim The Batting Fabric

Once the quilting is finished, you can trim with a good pair of scissors the batting fabric. (don’t trim the fabric for the back)

9 – Self Biding The Table Runner

With the help of the patchwork ruler, the rotary cutter and the cutting mat, trim the fabric for the back to 1 inch bigger than the table runner on each side.

To stitch on the self biding, you need to fold up the fabric for the back to meet the table runner edge, than fold the biding up to cover the edge of the table runner and pinch a few pins all around as you keep working to fold up the self biding on the four sides of the table runner.

Stitch on to close the self biding on the table runner.

10 – Stitch On the Stars Points

As you could see, I made the stars points by folding diagonally one square of fabric, you can decide to leave the stars like this as they look great.

I decided to work on two stars to stitch the points as the Cathedral Window, all you need is to fold back gently each triangle edge and stitch on by hand or with your sewing machine. This way stars points will look curved and it will add a special touch to your table runner.
