Step 2 – How To Prepare All The Pieces For The Applique

Once you cut out all the paper templates, take one at the time and lay it on the back of the piece of fabric you will be working with, pinch a pin and with the pair of scissors for fabric, cut the fabric for each piece, add 1/4 inch for the seam in all sides of each piece.

Fold back the seam and mark it with your fingers or with a warm iron.

There are a few techniques that will help you to work on the seams on each piece for the applique:

  • Glue the seams on the back.
  • Pinch a few pins on the seams
  • Do basting stitches on the seams on each piece.

I like to work by making basting stitches, as I find this way these stitches hold the fabric and the paper template all the time, it’s secure and it doesn’t hurt your fingers as pins do when you work on the applique of each piece.

Basting stitches are easy to remove and it will help you also to remove fast the paper template from each piece, this won’t happen when you glue the seams, sometimes it can get hard to remove the paper template from each piece.

Step 3 – How To Prepare Your Block For The Hand Applique

Once you get all the applique pieces prepare, you need to fold in the middle the block and with your fingers mark the middle.

Open the block, fold each piece for the applique also in the middle, these marks will help you to lay over the block each piece, as you work laying the pieces on the block, pinch a few pins.

Do some basting stitches to hold the first pieces on the block and remove the pins. Just start with the first pieces, smaller pieces will be worked later.

Step 4 – How To Do The Hand Applique

To work on the hand applique, do some small stitches on the edge of each piece all around, when you finish the hand applique on each piece, you can cut the fabric from the block behind each piece with the help of a pair of scissors with a sharp point, remove the paper template from each piece.

Continue working this way, do the applique of each piece and cut the back of the block from each piece and remove the paper template.

When you work on small pieces, you can place the paper template on the back of the fabric and fold back the seams and mark the edge with your fingers, remove the paper template and fold back the seams and do the basting stitches, this way when you do the hand applique, you don’t need to cut the back of the block to remove the paper template from small pieces.
