Apple Core Quilt Block Step by Step Tutorial

As this hand piecing block is part of the Sampler Quilt 2021, it will be 10 x 10 inches, in case, you want to make a block for a different quilt or to make a pillow, you can make it bigger or smaller by adding more strips in both directions or you can make the block with less strips.

There is a few different ways or techniques to make this block, for this tutorial I will share the steps to follow to use the hand piecing technique, the same steps can be followed if you prefer to make this block with your sewing machine.

1 – Apple Core Hand Piecing

The first thing to do is to lay out all the pieces on your work table, I’m using a block already made for the Sampler Quilt as reference of the size, I lay all the pieces on this block to see how the pieces look like before I started the hand piecing.

Once you’re happy with the layout, it’s time to start the hand piecing

2 – How To Hand Piecing The Apple Core Quilt Block

This quilt pattern needs to be hand piecing by making strips, you can see on the image above, the five strips that will form the block.

Work on the hand piecing strip by strip.

Take the first piece from a strip, pretty side up, and lay over it the second piece, pretty side down, pin both pieces in the middle first and then pin both edges.

Stitch along the curved edge and remove the pins as you go. Continue stitching the rest of the pieces to form the first strip.

You will need to continue stitching the rest of the strips, follow the same steps.

4 – How To Make The Quilting Sandwich

Before you make the quilting sandwich, check the block measure, it should be 10 x 10 inches, in case it is smaller, you can add four strips to make it bigger.

On the Sampler Quilt 2021, I’m working to make a Summer Quilt, by this means with no batting fabric and with flannel fabric as the back fabric on this quilt.

At home, if you want to make the Sampler Quilt 2021 with the traditional technique to make a quilt, you can add the batting fabric in the middle of each block.

The Apple Core Quilt Block is finished and it looks pretty, well done!

Can the Apple Core Quilt Bloc Be Made With EPP?

Yes, it can be done using the technique of EPP (English Paper Piecing).

In case, you want to use the EPP technique to make this block, all you need is to cut the paper template to the size required, by this means you will need to trim the seam allowance from the template I give you on this tutorial.

Make as many paper templates as needed to make this block and follow the instructions for the EPP.

After you finish all the piecing, remove the paper templates and follow the quilting steps on this tutorial.

I hope you have as much fun making this new block for the Sampler Quilt 2021 as I did!
